About Us

Opera NOVA is a volunteer-based non-profit organization, founded in 1962 as the Opera Theatre of Northern Virginia(OTNV). The Opera Theater closed in 2011 and it was restructured into Opera NOVA. Opera NOVA was incorporated in the Commonwealth of Virginia as a volunteer-based non-profit organization with current IRS 501(C)(3) status.

A part of its mission is to educate adults and children, alike, in its local community by producing 3 to 4 operatic productions each year.

Under the leadership of Miriam Miller, President, over 50,000 children have been exposed to opera in the Northern Virginia community. “I consider myself a steward for the residents of Arlington, Virginia “Arlingtonians” who formed Opera NOVA; for the members of the Arlington Service League in the 1970s who gave money to fund the first children’s opera and for those who have helped to advance the cause of educating children and adults about the classical arts over the years. I hope to keep that work alive. I see my volunteer work as a contribution to Arlington County and its citizens. Although Opera NOVA serves all of Northern Virginia, I view Arlington as the core of its heart.”
